    Originally designed for ship engines and often associated with sports cars, turbochargers are now standard equipment on most trucks and heavy industrial equipment.

    Turbochargers take the waste heat form the engine and use that energy to pump more air into the combustion chambers. 

    Turbos are especially effective on diesel engines.  Turbos can improve the power output of an engine for 30% to over 200% depending on the design and the level of boost.

    And since the work of the turbocharger compressor is done with waste heat from the engine, fuel efficiency is improved at the same time power is increased.

    Turbochargers however have a rough life in the industrial environment.  Heat and dirt are the two biggest enemies of the turbo.

    Clean oil and plenty of it are essential to the life of a turbo.  Also, if the machine is shut down at a high exhaust temperature form operation under load at the time of shutdown, the oil can break down inside the turbocharger body.  This coking of the oil can lead to bearing failure.

    Also, uneven cooling from a machine shut down hot can lead to cracking of the turbo housing.

    For these reasons, it is important to allow a turbocharged engine to operate at reduced load or idle conditions for several seconds before shutdown to allow the exhaust temperatures to drop to a safe level.

    Keeping the intake air clean will also help keep the turbo alive.  Clean oil is also essential to the life of the turbocharger.
